Highway to Hell
Some shows are great
Ok, so for the cryptic title… Sometimes, some shows are great… And they are kinda plannified… Five years ago, Supernatural was born… The show seemed pretty odd on The WB (aiming mostly for teenagers and young students), it was dark, with no female sexy cast (which I won’t complain about), and a soundtrack mainly composed with classic rock songs (see the title above). Sam and Dean Winchester (yummy Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) were on the road looking for their absent father (Jeffrey Dean Morgan who might have a subscription with characters meant to die), killing demons… Eric Kripke, the creator said from the beginning that Supernatural was meant to be a five season show, each season a chapter, developping the mythology. Chapter One: Chasing absent Daddy, Chapter Two: Killing Yellow Eyed Demon, Chapter Three: Trying to prevent Dean from going to Hell (and failing), Chapter Four: Trying to prevent the Apocalypse from starting (and instead starting it), Chapter Five: Fight Lucifer… Well for the end of Chapter Five, as the Winchester brothers tend to screw up big time (see ending of Chapter Three and Four), I hope this time they will succeed (or not, it might be funny to watch the world end for once).
What’s the problem then?
The show became more and more successful… And now that we are close to the end of season five… They are thinking about renewing it and making a sixth season… And everybody is happy about it… I for one am not. Why?
Just an example: Prison Break. The show was plannified for 13 episodes and then for two seasons. And it was good. Til five minutes before the end of season 2, then the writers went south (in Panama) and they almost forgot that they had a TV Show to write… Going back to prison (even if it was a different prison) buried the show… And what about the part when they beheaded a character (Dr Sarah Tancredi) to bring her back in the show the year after (What the fuck?) with a super lame explanation)…
A story should have a beginning, a middle and an end…
If you reach the end of a story it’s always tempting to find a way to go on (only not to have to say goodbye to the characters you created, or TV Show wise, to get whatever you can from a successful show). The question is: can you find a creative way to go on? A new story engaging enough to propose? If for the Supernatural writers the answer is yes, then it’s good news… Although, I think it’s better news to finish with a good conclusion rather than go out being cancelled without being given a chance to write a satisfying end.
Update 19.02.2010: Due to a delay between actually writing the article and publishing it, this article is now obsolete (but is still a reflection of my thoughts so whatever). Supernatural was renewed for a 6th season (Yay?) but creator Eric Kripke won’t be the showrunner of season 6 (What the Fuck?). So wait and see, but I’m getting more and more pessimistic about the future of Supernatural…
